Deliciously Depressing

I was indulging in a divine red-velvet cupcake from Piece of Cake today—I mean really, what more could a girl ask for—when my friend Julie declared, "it turns out gourmet bakery cupcakes are higher in calories and fat than good ol' store-bought Hostess cupcakes." My heart sank for a moment...then I had another taste of the cream cheese icing and thought..."whatever."

Julie shares my love of NPR's Morning Edition (and Piece of Cake cupcakes, although today she sprang for the caramel instead of red velvet. also delish.). So, I'm confident all Julie wanted to do was share that love. Morning Edition ran a story about some of the Big Apple's best cupcakes and other wonderful bites that have a revolting number of calories.

We were particularly amazed by the pounds packed into a meal at Thomas Keller's Per Se, where we are extremely lucky to have enjoyed a few meals for business. It hurt a little to realize that we could walk from JFK to Per Se. Eat. Walk back to JFK and still not burn the number of calories consumed. Whoa.

But, have you ever eaten there? Um, worth it.

This got me thinking of a few other treats that are worth it. Right now, the top 5 on my Letterman-style list (excluding a block of cheese, obviously):

5.  Fox Bros. Bar-B-Que Tominator - Need I say more?  (Don't judge me. It is going to get worse before it gets better).

Tots smothered in Brunswick Stew and topped with Melted Cheese.

4. Fried Chicken Eggs Benedict from...Anywhere I can get my hands on one.

3.  Scenic 90 Cafe's French Dip - Add provolone cheese and a side of fried zucchini dipped in homemade ranch. Actually, while you're at it, add a sweet tea. This may be number one, but in an effort to show I'm not completely biased to my father's cooking, it lands at number three—right in the middle. Let's just say I would eat it everyday if I could. Then you could roll me wherever I needed to go!

Can you believe I don't have a photo? Guess you'll just have to go through the doors to see it for yourself!

2.  Chez Henri Au Moulin a Vent Chateaubriand au poivre cream - It could feed a horse. But the horse would have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands first. Perhaps one of the best steaks I've had (excluding yours, Dad), this juicy, tender dish was served with a reduced cream sauce that I could've eaten with a spoon. (I told you to stop judging me.)

I didn't take a photo when I was there, so this is what is on their site. You can't even see the best part - the cream sauce! You can, however, see the potatoes that I loved to dip in the sauce!

1.  Fox Bros. Bar-B-Que "Burger"  You really can't go wrong with anything you order at Fox Bros. (as evidenced by the twofer), but the day I discovered the "burger" life was never the same. Perhaps because I was in a food coma.

Chopped Brisket topped with bacon, tomato, red onion, pickles, melted pimento cheese and jalapeno mayo on a buttered, toasted sesame seed bun.

  1. Wow even as I write this the hint of bacon in the picture above is calling to me... Sometimes I think the number of calories are in direct correlation with the fondness of the memory. In case it was ever in question I will continue to eat cupcakes in all sizes, shapes and varying percentages of calories from fat-and yes, we can always split two between us- and to make it even better listen to NPR simultaneously :)
